Kuti made the statement during an interview with ObjecTV, where he argued that regular donations from Nigerians were preventing beggars from becoming angry enough to demand change.
According to the singer, beggars should be among those driving a revolution, but the support they receive from members of the public is easing their hardship and reducing the urgency to act.
“The beggars are the ones who are supposed to be angry in order to cause revolution, but since we give them money from time to time, they are not hungry enough to be angry,” he said.
The comment sparked mixed reactions on social media, with several users arguing that refusing to help street beggars would not necessarily lead to a revolution.
Kuti has consistently called for a revolution in Nigeria, criticising the country’s political leadership and describing the present crop of politicians as corrupt.
